This post is for Windows 7 so steps may vary for other versions of windows. When you install Docker on windows, setup also install one virtual box along with that, means docker runs on that virtual box instead of running on windows OS.
Let's see how to install and run Docker on windows.
Download and Install docker toolbox
As per below text from Docker official website, you need not to install docker toolbox if you system meet all the requirement to directly install docker desktop but windows 7 does not meet that requirement so first you need to install docker toolbox.
Legacy desktop solution. Docker Toolbox is for older Mac and Windows systems that do not meet the requirements of Docker Desktop for Mac and Docker Desktop for Windows. We recommend updating to the newer applications, if possible.
To install that, click on below link and then click on "Get Docker Toolbox for Windows" link as shown below.
Run the installer and that starts the installation.
Recommendation is to choose full installation but you can uncheck the options as needed.
Once the installation is complete, you notice three icons as shown below.
Now click on "Docker Quickstart Terminal" icon and that starts Docker.
To validate if installation is successful, run below command, that should show you version of docker.
